Claude's New Slack Tool is a Huge Step Forward for Teams

Anthropic is bringing its smart AI, Claude, directly into Slack with a new feature called Claude Tag. As someone who watches the tech and AI space very closely, I find this move incredibly interesting. To be clear, I haven't even had the chance to test it out myself yet. But looking at it from the outside, I have some strong thoughts on what Anthropic is doing here and what it means for the future of work.

Shedding Light on Hidden AI Use

To me, the most exciting part of this launch is how it might solve a massive headache that many businesses face today: invisible AI use. Right now, employees everywhere are secretly using AI tools on their personal accounts to draft emails or write code. Managers usually have no idea what company secrets are being uploaded to the web.

If a company handles everything through a central Slack tool like Claude Tag, we can finally see what is actually happening. Admins can set up activity logs to track exactly what the AI is doing and who asked it to do it. This gives companies a clear picture of AI use and lets them set healthy boundaries.

Do We Want Our Data in the Public Cloud?

But before we get too excited, there is a fundamental question we need to ask ourselves. Do we actually want all of our sensitive company data going to a public cloud?

In reality, this is probably already happening behind the scenes because employees are using AI on their own. But just because it is already happening doesn't mean we should just accept it. Before jumping on the Claude Tag bandwagon, every company needs to stop and think about whether sending their data to a public cloud is truly necessary. We must decide if the convenience is worth the risk.

Why the Admin Controls Stand Out

If a company does decide to go ahead, the security controls in this tool strike me as the real highlight. Anthropic is letting admins block different departments from sharing information. For example, the sales team's AI won't be able to talk to the engineering team's AI. This keeps secret code and financial plans right where they belong.

However, there is still room for improvement. While channel permissions are great, I believe companies will definitely want to link this directly to their own main security login systems.

On the bright side, because admins can approve which tools the AI connects to, they can stop employees from using unsafe, untested third-party add-ons. That is a massive relief for any IT team.

A True Team Player

In the past, we had to find messy workarounds to get AI to collaborate with groups. What Anthropic has built here makes teamwork feel much more natural. Claude can follow public channel histories to stay updated without you having to copy and paste background information. It can even work in the background on long tasks while you are logged off.

Having this built directly into a chat app we already use every day is a game-changer.

The Vendor Lock-In Catch

While I think this is a fantastic concept to try out, there is another issue that makes me hesitate.

Using this tool ties you completely to Claude and Anthropic's pricing. In my view, it is always safer to use tools that are "AI-independent." That way, if a better or cheaper AI comes along next month, you can easily swap it out without rebuilding your whole workspace. Being locked into one AI provider is a risk many businesses might not want to take.

What’s Next?

This launch is happening at a very busy time. Tech giants are racing to put AI agents into workplace chats, competing with Microsoft Copilot and OpenAI. Plus, governments are starting to restrict certain AI models, making safe and compliant tools more important than ever.

If your company is currently using older Claude setups in Slack, you have 30 days to switch over to Claude Tag. Anthropic is even giving out free credits to help people test it. If you want to try it, the setup is simple: link the app, set your data permissions, set your spending budgets so you don't get a surprise bill, and test it in a private channel first.

In the end, this is definitely a tool worth watching, even if we should stay careful about sending our data to the cloud and getting too locked into one AI brand.
